Published July 27, 2010

SUMMIT — The charges against three suspects involved in the beating death of a Summit man have been upgraded from manslaughter to murder, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office announced today.
Khayri Williams-Clark, 18, of Summit; Nigel Dumas, 19, of Morristown; and a 17-year-old Summit resident were charged in the assault of Abelino Mazariego, 47, who died three days later.
The case has been referred to the grand jury.
Mazariego was found alone in the Summit Promenade off Springfield Avenue that Saturday night, July 17, around 9:30 p.m., authorities said.
A video recorded at the scene shows one teenager holding Mazariego’s shirt in front of him while another punched him in the face. Investigators believe the attack was unprovoked.
Williams-Clark posted bail of $100,000 Monday. Dumas is being held in the Union County Jail in lieu of $250,000. The 17-year-old remains in custody at the county juvenile detention center.
